Uzbekistan Discusses Demographic Sustainability Policies
Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) — A seminar on strengthening demographic sustainability and promoting data-driven policymaking was held in Uzbekistan on 21 April.
The event was organized by the Ministry of Economy and Finance of Uzbekistan in cooperation with the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) and the Institute of Macroeconomic and Regional Research. It brought together representatives of international organizations, government agencies, and research institutions.
A central focus of the discussions was the integration of demographic factors into socio-economic planning. Participants emphasized that the use of reliable demographic data and analytical approaches is critical for informed decision-making, particularly amid the growing impact of climate change.
Opening remarks highlighted the importance of cooperation between the Ministry of Economy and Finance and UNFPA, as well as ongoing joint initiatives. It was noted that the ministry plays a coordinating role in ensuring demographic sustainability. Special attention was given to human capital development, including creating conditions for young people to realize their potential as a key driver of economic growth.
The seminar also explored approaches to forecasting demographic trends and incorporating them into public policy, investment planning, and sectoral programs. Such an approach is seen as essential for the comprehensive development of employment, healthcare, education, social protection, migration, and infrastructure.
A separate session addressed the relationship between demographic processes and climate change. Participants noted that this interaction creates both risks and opportunities, requiring integrated and cross-sectoral solutions.
Following the seminar, the parties agreed to expand cooperation and continue systematic work in these areas.
