UN General Assembly Adopts Uzbekistan-Initiated Resolution on Parliaments and Social Development

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.uz) — The United Nations General Assembly has adopted by a majority vote the resolution entitled "Strengthening the Role of Parliaments in Accelerating Social Development," initiated by Uzbekistan.

The initiative was first proposed by President Shavkat Mirziyoyev during the 75th session of the UN General Assembly in September 2020. Over the following years, Uzbekistan's diplomatic efforts helped transform the proposal into an international document that secured broad support among UN member states.

The resolution highlights Uzbekistan's experience in hosting the 150th Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union in Tashkent, which concluded with the adoption of the Tashkent Declaration.

The document aims to promote greater participation of women and young people in parliamentary activities, support developing countries and strengthen international cooperation in the field of social development.

The resolution was supported by 167 countries. A total of 61 states co-sponsored the initiative, including Austria, Brazil, China, Germany, Japan, the Republic of Korea and Spain.

The resolution also calls on member states to involve parliaments more actively in implementing and monitoring the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, including through the preparation of Voluntary National Reviews, parliamentary oversight of national commitments and stronger engagement with civil society.

In addition, the document encourages broader participation of parliamentarians in UN activities and recommends further development of national statistical systems to improve the assessment of progress in social development.

According to the statement, the adoption of the resolution reflects broad international support for Uzbekistan's initiatives and recognition of the country's open and constructive foreign policy.
