Uzbekistan, Afghanistan expand textile and agro-processing ties

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) — A meeting between a delegation from Afghanistan and representatives of the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Uzbekistan was held in Tashkent as part of a United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) program aimed at supporting Afghanistan’s development.

During the talks between the Afghan delegation and A. Shaykhov, adviser to the chairman of the Chamber of Commerce and Industry, both sides emphasized the need to elevate bilateral relations and strengthen economic cooperation.

The meeting was attended by Oliver Stolpe, UNODC Regional Representative for Afghanistan, Central Asia, Iran and Pakistan, as well as Tosa Sota, head of the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) office in Afghanistan.

The parties discussed prospects for expanding trade and economic cooperation between Uzbekistan and Afghanistan.

Special attention was given to cotton processing and textile production, fruit and vegetable processing, and the development of joint production chains.

Following the meeting, a memorandum of understanding was signed aimed at strengthening mutually beneficial cooperation.

The sides also reached several agreements and agreed to hold such meetings on a regular basis.
