Uzbek Lawmakers Pass Labor Code Amendments on Discrimination
Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.uz) — The Legislative Chamber of the Oliy Majlis has reviewed article by article and adopted in the second reading the draft law "On Amending and Supplementing the Labor Code of the Republic of Uzbekistan in Connection with the Implementation of International Labor Standards into National Legislation."
The bill, introduced by a group of deputies as a legislative initiative, is aimed at the consistent implementation of the provisions of Convention No. 111 of the International Labour Organization, which was previously ratified by the Republic of Uzbekistan.
The document provides for expanding the list of signs of discrimination in the field of labor and employment established in the Labor Code. In particular, it is proposed to supplement it with grounds such as "skin color" and "political views."
Special attention in the bill is paid to ensuring the honor and dignity of employees, as well as creating effective legal mechanisms to prevent harassment in the workplace. To this end, it is proposed to supplement the Labor Code with a new norm establishing the inadmissibility of harassment in the field of labor and employment.
As noted during the discussion, the adoption of the law will contribute to the further strengthening of guarantees for the labor rights of citizens, confirm the commitment of Uzbekistan to international labor standards, and raise the country's prestige in the international arena.
Following the review, the deputies adopted the draft law and sent it to the Senate for consideration.
