Uzbek Boy, 6, Dies at Istanbul Tram Stop in Fatih
Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) — A six-year-old citizen of Uzbekistan died on Sunday after becoming trapped between a tram platform and the tracks at a stop in Istanbul's Laleli district, the Uzbek Consulate General in Istanbul confirmed Tuesday.
The incident occurred on June 8 in the Fatih district, one of Istanbul's most heavily trafficked tourist corridors. The child had been traveling in Turkey with his parents and family members as tourists when the accident occurred.
According to preliminary information, the boy became wedged between the platform edge and the tram line after exiting a vehicle. He sustained severe injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.
Turkish law enforcement authorities have opened an investigation into the circumstances of the incident.
The Consulate General of the Republic of Uzbekistan in Istanbul extended its deepest condolences to the family and loved ones of the deceased and confirmed that consular staff are actively providing legal and consular assistance to the family.
In a public notice issued alongside the announcement, the consulate urged Uzbek citizens traveling in Istanbul to exercise heightened vigilance over children's safety given the city's dense transport infrastructure and high traffic intensity. Citizens were specifically advised not to leave minors unattended near transit stops and rail corridors.
