Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) — President Shavkat Mirziyoyev has signed a decree awarding UK citizens John Le Breton and Phyllis Emily Le Breton the Order of “Dustlik” of the Republic of Uzbekistan. The award was granted posthumously in recognition of their courage and humanitarianism during World War II.

During the war, the British couple saved the life of Uzbek soldier Bokijon Akramov, who had escaped from a Nazi concentration camp on the island of Jersey. Despite the grave risks, the Le Bretons provided him with shelter in their home.

The presidential decree highlights their exceptional contribution to the values of peace, friendship, and solidarity between nations. Their actions are recognized as a powerful example of selflessness and humanity under conditions of occupation and terror.

During the war, Jersey was under German occupation, and assisting escaped prisoners of war was punishable by death. Nevertheless, the British family chose to protect the Uzbek soldier, demonstrating remarkable moral courage.

The “Dustlik” Order is a state award of Uzbekistan granted to individuals for strengthening friendship and cooperation between nations, fostering economic and cultural ties, and rendering distinguished service to the Uzbek people.
