Tashkent launches ‘green wave’ traffic system near Amir Temur Square
Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.uz) — Tashkent has launched a synchronized traffic light system based on the “green wave” principle near Amir Temur Square and adjacent intersections. The Tashkent Traffic Management Center installed five new traffic light facilities operating under a unified algorithm, the center said.
The system links five traffic lights into a single traffic corridor designed to operate in both directions. Under the required conditions, drivers can pass through the area with minimal stops at traffic lights.
In one direction, a vehicle that starts moving on a green light at the intersection of Amir Temur and Bukhoro streets near the Beeline office can pass through the roundabout and continue along Amir Temur Street toward Alay Market without stopping at subsequent traffic lights.
The same principle applies in the opposite direction for vehicles traveling along Amir Temur Street from the State Museum of the History of the Timurids. If traffic conditions are met, vehicles can pass through the roundabout and reach the intersection of Amir Temur and Bukhoro streets under the “green wave” system.
The synchronization does not mean that all traffic lights turn green simultaneously. A specific time interval is calculated for each subsequent traffic light, taking into account the time required for a vehicle to travel through the relevant section.
The system works effectively when drivers start moving on a green signal, maintain the designated speed, do not obstruct traffic and keep a steady pace.
The traffic management center emphasized that the “green wave” is not intended to increase driving speeds but to create a safer and more consistent traffic rhythm. Drivers are advised to avoid sudden acceleration and braking, maintain a safe distance, follow traffic signals and give way to pedestrians.
The new system is expected to reduce unnecessary stops, make traffic flow more evenly, shorten queues and waiting times at intersections, and reduce sudden acceleration and braking, fuel consumption and harmful emissions.
The next stage will involve developing an algorithm to connect the section between the roundabout on Amir Temur Avenue and Makhtumkuli Street to the “green wave” system. This is expected to expand the coordinated traffic corridor.
The new section therefore brings five traffic lights and two directions of travel into a single algorithm designed to enable more consistent and safer passage through the intersections.
