Tashkent Allocates 5.1 Billion Soums for Power Grids
Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.uz) — The Tashkent Khokimiyat will allocate 5.128 billion soums from the City Development Fund to modernize low-voltage power transmission lines. The corresponding decision by capital Khokim Shavkat Umurzakov, dated 29 July, was published on the E-qaror portal.
The funds will be directed to Tashkent City Electric Networks LLC to carry out work on modernizing the city distribution network in accordance with a decree of the President of Uzbekistan adopted in July 2023. The document notes that the financing proposal was submitted by Deputy Khokim for Housing and Communal Services Obidjon Muminov.
The decision comes amid efforts to increase power supply reliability and update the capital's energy infrastructure.
Earlier, President of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev pointed out systemic management issues in the sector during a meeting on fuel and energy development. According to him, dozens of accidents occur annually at substations and hundreds at transformer points during summer and winter periods, while power grid development often fails to keep pace with actual growth in electricity consumption.
The head of state also noted that over the past five years, electricity consumption in several areas — including the Yangihayot and Yakkasaray districts of Tashkent, as well as the Ahangaran district and the city of Shirin — has more than doubled. Meanwhile, the lack of accurate calculations for infrastructure development needs leads to inefficient spending of budget funds, he assessed.
Following the meeting, personnel changes were made in the energy sector, and the new leadership was tasked with implementing modern management approaches, developing a targeted energy infrastructure development program, and improving power supply reliability across the country.
A task was also set to establish a Center for Digitalization of the Fuel and Energy Sector and Implementation of Artificial Intelligence to analyze automated electricity and gas metering data, identify potential violations, and increase sector efficiency.
