Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.uz) — Uzbekistan’s President Shavkat Mirziyoyev has reviewed the reconstruction and landscaping of the Imam Maturidi memorial complex in Samarkand. The 10.2-hectare site now features a new mosque, renovated mausoleums of prominent Islamic scholars, a research centre, a library and a museum.

Work at the Chokardiza cemetery began in preparation for the 1,155th anniversary of the birth of Abu Mansur Maturidi, which was widely commemorated in Uzbekistan last year in accordance with a presidential decree.

During the visit, Mirziyoyev emphasised the importance of studying the scholarly legacy of Uzbekistan’s ancestors and passing it on to younger generations. He said the institutions established at the complex should serve as educational centres where young people can gain a deeper understanding of Imam Maturidi’s works.

“A thousand years ago, our great ancestor Imam Maturidi provided scholarly justification for every conclusion and supported it with convincing evidence, warning people against ignorance. Studying and explaining the content and essence of these works to our young people is more relevant today than ever,” Mirziyoyev said.

In addition to the mosque and educational and research facilities, an entrance portal has been built, along with hotels and a large car park. Trees of local and foreign species adapted to Uzbekistan’s climatic conditions have also been planted across the grounds.

During the visit, tribute was paid to the great scholars, and verses from the Quran were recited.

The president stressed that visitors should not only come to the complex on pilgrimage but also learn about Imam Maturidi’s scholarly and spiritual legacy and his role in the Islamic world.

“The improvement of such important pilgrimage sites carries profound spiritual and educational significance. People should come here not only to make a pilgrimage, but also to gain knowledge and understand their identity,” the president said.
