Mirziyoyev Condoles Philippines After 7.8 Mindanao Quake

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) — A 7.8-magnitude earthquake has killed at least 35 people off the Philippine island of Mindanao — drawing an immediate diplomatic response from Uzbekistan's head of state.

President Shavkat Mirziyoyev sent a formal message of condolence to Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos on June 8, expressing solidarity with victims of the disaster and their families. Presidential spokesman Sherzod Asadov confirmed the message, noting that Mirziyoyev extended words of support and sympathy to the bereaved and wished a swift recovery to those injured.

The quake struck the southern Philippines on the morning of June 8, with its epicenter located 33 kilometers deep off the coast of General Santos city on Mindanao island. At least 35 people were killed and more than 200 injured, according to the latest figures. The tremors were also felt across a wide regional radius, with weak seismic activity recorded in Indonesia, Palau, and southern Japan.

The condolence message reflects Tashkent's broader diplomatic practice of engaging with major humanitarian events affecting partner and observer nations — reinforcing Uzbekistan's presence in multilateral diplomatic discourse even in moments of crisis.
