Kazakhstan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan Agree Water Use Plan

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) — Representatives of water management and energy agencies from Kazakhstan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan discussed coordination of the operating regime of the Bakhri Tojik reservoir for June–August 2026, officials said. The meeting focused on managing transboundary water resources during the upcoming vegetation period and coordinating regional water supply.

The talks were attended by Tajikistan’s Minister of Energy and Water Resources Daler Juma, Uzbekistan’s Minister of Water Resources Shavkat Khamraev and Minister of Energy Jurabek Mirzamakhmudov, as well as Kazakhstan’s Minister of Water Resources and Irrigation Nurlan Nurzhigitov.

The sides presented proposals on the reservoir’s operating regime for the summer period. Particular attention was paid to water deliveries through the Dostyk interstate canal, intended to support agricultural needs in the Maktaaral and Zhetysay districts of Kazakhstan’s Turkestan Region.

During the exchange of views, participants agreed on the need for continued consultations on specific parameters of the draft joint protocol. The discussions aimed to refine technical and organizational aspects of the future water use regime.

At the conclusion of the meeting, the parties reaffirmed their commitment to continued coordination in the management of transboundary water resources.

They emphasized the importance of joint efforts to ensure stable water conditions in the Syr Darya River basin and to take into account the interests of all stakeholders.
