Jizzakh Resident Sentenced for Sharing Extremist Content

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.uz) — A resident of Jizzakh has been sentenced to four years of restricted freedom for posting a video clip on Telegram that official expertise identified as religious extremist material, according to court documents.

The investigation was initiated after the man posted a video to his account stories in April 2025. The post was visible to his contacts and was later determined by experts to contain extremist content.

During an inspection of the individual's mobile phone, law enforcement officers discovered additional files linked to Katibat al-Tawhid wal-Jihad, an organization banned in Uzbekistan. The media files included calls for the establishment of a caliphate. Investigators established that the man belonged to dozens of related messaging groups and had forwarded restricted materials to other users.

In court, the defendant pleaded guilty and expressed remorse. He testified that he was unaware of the illegal nature of the files and stated that some of the content had automatically saved to his device memory after viewing.

The court took into account that the defendant was a first-time offender, had received positive character references from his neighborhood, and was supporting a young family. Applying Article 57 of the Criminal Code, the judge imposed a non-custodial sentence.

The individual will serve the four-year term of restricted freedom at his place of residence under probation service supervision. During the sentence period, he is prohibited from changing his residence, leaving the region, or accessing the internet.

The court ordered the destruction of the seized smartphone and mandated the blocking of the user's messaging account.
