Inflation in Uzbekistan accelerates to 6.4% in June in annual terms
Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.uz) — The composite consumer price index (CPI) in Uzbekistan grew by 0.6% in June 2026 compared to the previous month, while annual inflation accelerated to 6.4% against 5.5% recorded in May. The National Committee for Statistics reported the data, noting that prices have increased by 3.3% since the beginning of the year.
The primary driver behind the price acceleration was the revision of energy tariffs introduced in June. Electricity rates for the population increased by an average of 9.6% across the republic, while network gas rose by 10.7%. The cost of coal, which was previously sold to the population at regulated rates, expanded 2.1 times: as of June, coal was excluded from the register of strategically socially significant goods, and state price regulation on the commodity was lifted.
The rise in coal prices alone added 0.48 percentage points to the monthly index. Overall, the section for "Housing services, water, electricity, gas, and other fuels" gained 7.8% over the month, and 13.4% in annual terms.
Fuel prices also experienced a notable increase. Average consumer prices for gasoline went up by 3.9% over the month, with the AI-95 grade rising by 6.0%. Propane added 11.3% with an upper price boundary of 7,800 soums per liter, and methane increased by 8.8%. Taxi services became 1.3% more expensive, whereas rail travel edged down by 0.3% and air travel dropped by 0.6%. Statisticians attributed the decreases to changes in the exchange rate of the national currency against the euro and Swiss franc, alongside adjustments to fuel surcharges on certain routes. The combined contribution of the housing-communal utilities and transport sections to the monthly index growth amounted to 1.13 percentage points.
Food products served as a mitigating factor, with prices in this section decreasing by 1.5% over the month, which lowered the composite figure by 0.61 percentage points. Seasonal price drops affected fruit and vegetable produce: eggplants fell by 46.6%, fresh tomatoes by 38.3%, bell peppers by 31.4%, watermelons by 26.3%, and cucumbers by 25.0%. Conversely, carrots became 6.5% more expensive and onions rose by 3.6%. Among staple foods, price increases were recorded for rice and broken rice by 2.3%, pasteurized milk and buckwheat by 1.2%, and mutton and boneless beef by 1.0%. In annual terms, mutton rose by 23.1%, beef by 20.6%, and eggs by 16.2%.
Excluding fruit and vegetable products, monthly inflation stood at 1.5%, while annual inflation reached 6.9%. Non-food goods rose by 2.3% over the month, and services grew by 1.8%, while food products fell by 1.4%.
On a regional level, no sharp deviations from the national average were recorded. The highest monthly price growth was observed in the Khorezm region at 1.0%, and the lowest in the Syrdarya region at 0.3%. Annual inflation across regions ranged from 5.7% in the Surkhandarya region to 6.8% in the Samarkand region.
The Committee reminded that since January 2026, the index calculation has been based on 517 items of goods and services using over 2 million price quotations. In addition to the main metric, an analytical index is published based on the Jevons geometric formula recommended by IMF experts. In June, this auxiliary index stood at 100.2% for the month and 102.5% compared to December 2025.
