Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.uz) — An investigator with the Ferghana city department of the Department for Combating Economic Crimes under Uzbekistan’s General Prosecutor’s Office has been detained on suspicion of accepting a US$100,000 bribe, the State Security Service (SSS) said.

The operation was carried out by SSS officers in cooperation with the General Prosecutor’s Office’s Internal Security Department.

According to the agency, the investigator had promised to influence investigative proceedings in a criminal case involving embezzlement or misappropriation of property under Article 167 of Uzbekistan’s Criminal Code. Specifically, he allegedly intended to secure decisions in favour of the accused, reduce the amount of damage attributed to the case and have a previously issued wanted notice cancelled.

A criminal case has been opened against the detainee under Article 210, Part 3, Clause “a” of the Criminal Code of Uzbekistan, which covers accepting a bribe on an especially large scale.

The investigation is ongoing.
