Corruption Scheme in Tashkent Power Grid Exposed

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) — A corruption-related case has been uncovered in one of the districts of Tashkent involving two engineers from an electricity distribution company.

According to law enforcement authorities, the individuals attempted to obtain an illegal payment in exchange for reducing administrative penalties.

During an inspection, the specialists issued a report on an alleged violation in the electricity metering system at a branch of a commercial bank. The document stated that electricity consumption accounting had been carried out with violations.

After preparing the report, the engineers allegedly demanded 8,000 US dollars from the head of a limited liability company that owned the meter. In return, they promised to assist in reducing the imposed fine from 400 million soums to 65 million soums.

Their actions were stopped during an operational measure at the moment of receiving the money through an intermediary. The operation was conducted by the State Security Service of Uzbekistan together with the Department for Combating Economic Crimes.

A criminal case has been initiated, and investigative procedures are ongoing.
