WHO Chief Visits Pediatric Oncology Center in Tashkent
Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) — The Director-General of the World Health Organization, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, together with First Lady of Uzbekistan Ziroat Mirziyoyeva, visited the Republican Center of Pediatric Oncology in Tashkent.
During the visit, the WHO chief praised the work of the Zamin Foundation, chaired by Ziroat Mirziyoyeva. He noted that the foundation has played a key role in significantly improving the country’s system of care for children with cancer and in establishing the Mehrli Maktab network of hospital schools.
Tedros Ghebreyesus emphasized that, thanks to these initiatives, children undergoing treatment receive not only medical care but also educational and social support. This, he said, enables them to continue their development and pursue their aspirations despite serious illness.
He also reported meeting patients at the center, including Samira, a child who had undergone cancer treatment and previously took part in an event on childhood cancer at the United Nations General Assembly in New York alongside the First Lady and the WHO chief last year.
Another patient mentioned was Dilnavoz, a young artist who completed treatment and plans to become a translator in the future.
The WHO Director-General reaffirmed the organization’s commitment to supporting Uzbekistan’s efforts in improving pediatric oncology care and expanding cooperation with regional and international partners in this field.
