Former Namangan Mayor Jailed 11 Years for Corruption

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.uz) — The Uzbekistan District Criminal Court has found former Namangan mayor Anvarjon Otahodjaev and several other defendants guilty of multiple corruption and abuse of office offenses.

The former city mayor was sentenced to 11 years in prison and banned for three years from holding positions or performing work involving material responsibility. This was reported by the press service of the Supreme Court of Uzbekistan.

The court convicted Anvarjon Otahodjaev under Article 167(3)(a) (embezzlement or misappropriation), Article 168(3)(c) (fraud), Article 205(2)(a) (abuse of power or official authority), Article 206(2)(a) (exceeding official authority), Article 207(1) (official negligence), Article 209(2)(a) (official forgery), and Article 210(3)(a) (bribe-taking) of Uzbekistan's Criminal Code.

Several other defendants were also tried in the case. Three were sentenced to prison terms ranging from seven to 10 years. Two defendants received two years and six months of corrective labor, while another was sentenced to three years of restricted freedom.

As previously reported, the former Namangan mayor was detained in September 2025 while allegedly receiving a US$60,000 bribe.

According to the investigation, he had promised a businessman the right to build a residential complex on the site of old residential buildings in exchange for the payment.

The trial began in April 2026.
