Uzbekistan to Host Global World Bank IDA Meeting
Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) — A global meeting of the International Development Association (IDA), part of the World Bank Group, will be held in Tashkent at the end of 2026.
The announcement was made during a high-level roundtable and media briefing held on 15 June at Uzbekistan’s Ministry of Economy and Finance.
The event was co-chaired by Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Economy and Finance Jamshid Kuchkarov and World Bank Vice President for Development Finance Akihiko Nishio. The discussions focused on the role of IDA in global poverty reduction and the development of cooperation with the government of Uzbekistan.
It was noted that Uzbekistan will become the first country in Central Asia to host a meeting of this level. Established in 1960, the International Development Association provides financial support to 78 low-income countries, directing funds to education, healthcare, infrastructure, and job creation.
During the briefing, details were also presented on the scale of current financing. Under the 21st replenishment cycle (IDA-21), a record package of US$100 billion has been formed for the period 2026–2028. More than 25 World Bank-supported projects are currently being implemented in Uzbekistan, totalling around US$5.5 billion.
Cooperation between Uzbekistan and IDA has continued since 1992 and has reached a new level after 2017. The country is among the largest recipients of IDA financing globally and ranks second in the Europe and Central Asia region by volume of funds attracted.
The upcoming meeting in Tashkent is expected to serve as a platform to review interim results of the IDA-21 programme and prepare for the next financing cycle. Uzbekistan is also expected to present its reform experience aimed at sustainable economic growth, poverty reduction, and job creation.
