Uzbekistan to Establish Own Port Infrastructure in Georgia
Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.uz) — Uzbekistan will establish its own port infrastructure in Georgia and transition completely to an electronic exchange system for international road transport permits, Minister of Transport Ilkhom Makhkamov announced in an interview with the O‘zbekiston 24 television channel.
According to the minister, the new agreements were reached during the state visit of the President of Uzbekistan, Shavkat Mirziyoyev, to Georgia last week.
A key outcome of the negotiations was an agreement to completely switch to a digital system for exchanging road transport permits, covering both bilateral transit between the two nations and transport operations involving third states. Makhkamov noted that the implementation of the electronic system will ensure procedural transparency, reduce document processing times, and create additional conveniences for transport operators. According to his data, more than 60% of Uzbek road carriers currently utilize the Georgian route for international transport.
The two sides also reached an agreement with the management of Georgian Railways to expand the system of tariff discounts. While a discount of up to 70% previously applied only to container shipping along the CASCA+ international transport route connecting six countries, the tariff reductions will now be extended to other types of railway wagons as well.
Special attention during the talks was paid to the development of maritime logistics. Makhkamov stated that Uzbekistan and Georgia agreed on the creation of dedicated Uzbek infrastructure within Georgian sea ports. To implement the project, plans are underway to form a consortium of major freight forwarding companies, which will work alongside Uzbek exporters and importers to build the port infrastructure facilities.
