Uzbekistan tests satellite direct-to-device communication for first time
Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) — Uzbekistan has conducted its first demonstration of technology enabling direct satellite messaging to mobile devices through the Viasat Direct-to-Device (D2D) system, according to the results of a meeting held during the international GSMA M360 Eurasia forum.
Minister of Digital Technologies Sherzod Shermatov held talks with Viasat Regional Vice President Hilmi Tekinsoy, a company specializing in satellite and digital communication solutions.
During the meeting, the sides discussed the development of satellite communication technologies in Uzbekistan, expansion of internet coverage in remote regions, and modernization of telecommunications infrastructure. Special attention was given to the technical capabilities of D2D technology, which enables direct communication between satellites and mobile devices.
The sides also reviewed prospects for implementing pilot projects in Uzbekistan, followed by testing in selected regions and possible nationwide scaling. The importance of implementing these initiatives in coordination with the Ministry of Digital Technologies, national operators, and local companies was emphasized.
In addition, possible directions for supporting the development of national satellite solutions for Uzbekistan were discussed. Viasat representatives noted that such initiatives could increase the country’s potential in space technologies and expand connectivity not only within Uzbekistan but also in neighboring regions.
Following the talks, both sides expressed interest in further developing cooperation in satellite technologies, digital infrastructure, and telecommunications services.
