Uzbekistan Strengthens Measures Against Meningitis

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) — Uzbekistan is implementing additional measures in response to a rise in cases of meningococcal infection.

According to the Committee for Sanitary-Epidemiological Welfare and Public Health, a slight increase in cases was recorded in 2026, prompting strengthened preventive actions, particularly among children.

To prevent further spread of the infection, 8,024 doses of vaccine have been delivered to the country. Immunization has already covered 4,862 individuals who were in contact with infected patients. For citizens with medical contraindications to vaccination, chemical prophylaxis is being organized under medical supervision.

Official data show that 174 cases of meningococcal infection were registered in the first quarter of 2026, of which 168 cases involved children under the age of 14. In April, a 14% decrease in morbidity was recorded compared to March.

Meningitis is an inflammation of the membranes surrounding the brain and spinal cord, most often caused by bacterial or viral infections. The disease is considered dangerous due to its rapid progression and requires timely medical intervention.

As key preventive measures, specialists recommend timely vaccination, adherence to personal hygiene rules, prompt medical attention when symptoms appear, and caution when visiting crowded places. Vaccination is also advised before performing pilgrimage trips, including Hajj and Umrah, with limited participation in mass events upon return.

The authorities emphasized that vaccination remains the most effective protection against meningococcal infection.

Citizens are also urged to rely exclusively on official sources of information regarding the epidemiological situation.

The committee continues to implement a comprehensive set of measures aimed at ensuring a stable sanitary and epidemiological environment in the country.
