Uzbekistan Senate Tightens Laws on Drug-Related Crimes
Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) — The Senate of the Oliy Majlis of Uzbekistan has considered and approved a law providing for a comprehensive tightening of liability for the illegal circulation of narcotic drugs, their analogues, psychotropic substances, and potent substances.
The document introduces amendments to the Criminal Code, the Criminal Procedure Code, the Code of Administrative Responsibility, and several other legislative acts.
During the discussions, senators noted that in the context of the growing spread of synthetic drugs and increasing global risks of drug addiction, there is a need to update legal mechanisms for countering such threats. It was emphasized that the protection of public health and the preservation of the national genetic pool are considered priority areas of state policy.
Under the adopted law, criminal liability is strengthened not only for the illegal trafficking of narcotic drugs but also for the circulation of potent substances. For the first time, responsibility is separately established for the creation and operation of illegal drug laboratories, which, according to lawmakers, eliminates existing legal gaps.
The document also introduces a provision under which the distribution and promotion of drugs via the internet is recognized as an aggravating circumstance in the qualification of crimes. Additional penalties are предусмотрены for offenses committed near educational institutions, children’s camps, and dormitories.
Senators emphasized that the law introduces stricter measures for individuals who commit serious drug-related crimes, including restrictions on eligibility for early release. According to their assessment, this is aimed at improving the effectiveness of law enforcement and establishing a more stringent system for combating drug-related crime.
Following consideration, the law was approved by the Senate of the Oliy Majlis.
