Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.uz) — The price of propane on the Uzbek Commodity Exchange (UzRTSB) rose by nearly 65% in two days to a record 12.217 million soums per tonne after a limit on the maximum price increase during exchange trading was lifted.
On 16 September, a tonne of propane cost 7.412 million soums. On 17 September, the price rose to 11.904 million soums, an increase of 60.6% in one day. On 18 September, it reached 12.217 million soums, rising another 2.6%.
Thus, the price of propane increased by 4.8 million soums over two trading days, or about 65%. At the same time, sales volumes rose from 666 tonnes to 1,114 tonnes, an increase of 67.2%.
From 17 September, the previously established limit on increases in the selling price of liquefied gas produced domestically and imported into Uzbekistan was removed from exchange trading. The decision was made in accordance with an instruction issued by the Committee for Competition Development and Consumer Protection on 16 September.
The restriction on the starting price remains in place. The exchange does not accept bids from liquefied gas importers and domestic producers if the starting price exceeds 7.5 million soums per tonne.
Thus, the starting-price restriction remains in effect, while the maximum increase in the price of propane directly during trading is no longer limited by the previous price ceiling.
The antimonopoly authority had previously imposed restrictions on increases in propane prices on the exchange. In early November 2024, the maximum increase was limited to 20% of the seller’s starting price. The decision was made after the price of liquefied gas exceeded 10.1 million soums per tonne.
From 12 January, the maximum increase in the selling price of propane on the exchange was reduced from 20% to 10% of the starting price. At the same time, bids from producers and importers were not accepted if the starting price exceeded 7.5 million soums per tonne.
Under that restriction, the maximum propane price on the exchange could reach 8.25 million soums per tonne.
