Uzbekistan MPs Seek Review of Traffic Camera Systems

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) — Uzbekistan’s Legislative Chamber of the Oliy Majlis has considered sending a parliamentary inquiry to Interior Minister Aziz Tashpulatov regarding the effectiveness of photo- and video-recording systems on roads and the introduction of information technologies in traffic management.

Lawmakers noted that in recent years the country has carried out large-scale work to improve road safety. A regulatory framework has been established, including the Law “On Road Traffic” and a number of presidential decrees aimed at reducing accidents and strengthening control on roads.

As part of these measures, modern cameras and radar systems are being installed on highways to detect traffic violations. These systems are viewed as tools to improve driver discipline, reduce the number of road accidents, and minimize corruption risks.

At the same time, deputies highlighted a range of public complaints related to the operation of photo- and video-recording systems. These include cases of insufficient visibility of road signs when speed limits are changed, improper placement of signs, technical errors in data processing and fine issuance.

Concerns were also raised regarding the condition of certain road sections, inadequate lighting, absence or poor visibility of road markings, and a shortage of traffic lights at pedestrian crossings, all of which may contribute to violations of traffic rules.

The inquiry emphasized that during previous meetings chaired by the President, instructions were given to improve road infrastructure and ensure the safety of road users.

In this context, parliament has requested the Interior Ministry to provide clarifications on the implementation of the national program “Safe and Smooth Road,” the effectiveness of photo- and video-monitoring systems, the financing of infrastructure projects, and measures being taken to address existing road safety issues.
