Uzbekistan Foils Attempt to Sell Newborn Child

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) — Law enforcement authorities in Uzbekistan’s Bukhara region have prevented an attempt to illegally sell a newborn child, according to the regional Department of Internal Affairs.

The operational measures were carried out on April 6. According to the investigation, an 18-year-old resident of Bukhara district attempted to sell her newborn daughter, who was less than three days old, for US$4,000.

The suspect was detained in the act by law enforcement officers while receiving part of the agreed amount, totaling US$800.

A criminal case has been initiated under paragraph “b” of part 3 of Article 135 of the Criminal Code of the Republic of Uzbekistan, which provides liability for human trafficking. Investigations are currently ongoing.
