Uzbekistan Expands Free Legal Aid Guarantees

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) — Uzbekistan has strengthened its system of state-funded legal assistance for low-income citizens following the signing of a new law by President Shavkat Mirziyoyev introducing amendments to several legislative acts.

Under the updated Law “On Providing Legal Assistance at the Expense of the State,” individuals classified as low-income are now entitled to free legal aid when appealing to the Constitutional Court regarding the constitutionality of a law applied in their case.

According to the amendments, requests for such assistance will be submitted to the Constitutional Court through the “Legal Assistance” information system. The basis for initiating this process is a citizen’s petition filed alongside a complaint, provided that the applicant qualifies for state support.

The law comes into force on the day of its official publication.
