Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) — Uzbekistan has been elected to the United Nations Commission on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice for the 2027–2029 term, according to the press service of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
The election took place at the UN Headquarters in New York.
The Commission, established in 1992 and based in Vienna, consists of 40 member states elected for three-year terms. It is responsible for developing international standards in criminal justice, coordinating efforts against transnational crime, corruption, and cybercrime, and organizing the United Nations Congress on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice.
It is noted that Uzbekistan has joined the Commission for the first time under the quota of the Asia-Pacific Group, alongside countries including China, Japan, and Saudi Arabia.
The election is seen as recognition by the international community of ongoing reforms in Uzbekistan in the areas of rule of law, human rights protection, and judicial modernization.
According to the Foreign Ministry, support for Uzbekistan’s candidacy reflects a high level of trust among UN member states and confirms the country’s growing international standing.
Membership in the Commission provides additional opportunities to participate in shaping international standards, expand cooperation with foreign partners, and promote national reform experience.
Uzbekistan has stated its intention to actively participate in the work of the Commission, contributing to international cooperation, promoting humane criminal justice policies, and strengthening global efforts in crime prevention.
