Uzbekistan Cuts 2.6 Million Tons of Emissions via Renewables
Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) — Solar and wind power plants in Uzbekistan prevented the release of 2.6 million tons of atmospheric pollutants in the first five months of 2026, while also saving 1.2 billion cubic meters of natural gas, according to the Ministry of Energy on the occasion of World Environment Day marked on June 5.
The ministry said that large-scale solar and wind power plants generated 4.6614 billion kWh of electricity in January–May, which is 911 million kWh, or 24.3%, more than in the same period last year.
Of the total output, solar power plants accounted for 2.761 billion kWh, while wind power plants produced 1.9004 billion kWh.
Officials noted that these results not only reduced natural gas consumption but also significantly lowered the environmental impact of the country’s energy sector.
In total, solar, wind, and both small and large hydropower plants generated 8.5767 billion kWh of electricity since the beginning of the year.
For comparison, in January–May last year, solar and wind power plants produced 3.7504 billion kWh of electricity, including 2.2 billion kWh from solar and 1.5 billion kWh from wind generation.
According to the ministry, electricity generated by solar and wind power plants over the five-month period is equivalent to the consumption of 4.6 million households over the same period or the annual consumption of 1.9 million households.
The ministry stressed that the development of renewable energy sources plays a key role in strengthening national energy security and addressing environmental challenges, including emissions reduction and climate change mitigation.
