Uzbekistan, Belarus Deepen Education Ties in Tashkent Talks

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) — Tashkent is moving to sharpen its talent pipeline — and Minsk is a key partner in that push.

Uzbekistan's Deputy Foreign Minister Olimjon Abdullayev held talks with Belarusian Education Minister Andrei Ivanets in Tashkent on Tuesday, focusing on the two countries' bilateral education agenda and the cultivation of workforce-ready specialists suited to modern labor market demands.

The meeting, confirmed by Uzbekistan's Foreign Ministry, centered on expanding knowledge-exchange frameworks and building human capital capacity — priorities that reflect Tashkent's broader push to reform its education sector as part of President Shavkat Mirziyoyev's modernization agenda.

"The sides emphasized the importance of further activating cooperation between the two countries in the educational sphere," according to the official readout, with both delegations expressing clear interest in strengthening existing institutional ties.

A significant portion of the talks was devoted to the conditions and welfare of Uzbek nationals currently enrolled in Belarusian educational institutions. The two sides reviewed support mechanisms in place for Uzbek students and discussed measures to ensure comprehensive assistance throughout their studies — a signal that student mobility between the two post-Soviet states is an active and growing corridor.

Belarus has long been regarded as an affordable, high-quality destination for Central Asian students pursuing technical and medical degrees, and Uzbekistan — with one of the region's youngest and fastest-growing populations — represents a substantial source of enrolled students. The exact number of Uzbek students currently studying in Belarus was not disclosed in official statements.

The Tashkent meeting adds to a pattern of intensifying educational diplomacy across Central Asia, as governments seek to align academic output with labor market needs in rapidly diversifying economies.
