Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.uz) — Uzbekistan and Israel have agreed to expand cooperation in archival affairs, signing a memorandum of understanding between the Uzarkhiv Agency and the State Archives of Israel at a ceremony held at the National Archives of Uzbekistan.
The document was signed by Uzarkhiv Agency Director Ulugbek Yusupov and Ruth Avramovich, chief archivist of the State Archives of Israel, who led the Israeli delegation.
The event was also attended by Israeli Ambassador to Uzbekistan Gideon Lustig, as well as archival specialists, academics and public representatives from both countries.
The two sides discussed the preservation, study and digitisation of archival documents, the protection of historical and cultural heritage, the exchange of professional expertise and joint academic research. Particular attention was paid to introducing modern technologies into archival institutions.
Cooperation in this field has been developing for several years. In 2021, a memorandum of cooperation was signed with the Central Archives for the History of the Jewish People, followed by a cooperation agreement with the Yad Vashem memorial complex in 2022.
Speaking at the ceremony, Lustig highlighted the importance of friendly relations between Israel and Uzbekistan and emphasised the role of scientific and cultural cooperation in preserving historical memory.
The new memorandum is intended to strengthen ties between archival institutions in the two countries and create further opportunities for knowledge exchange, the study of historical sources and joint research projects.
The cooperation is also aimed at expanding access to archival materials for researchers and the general public.
