Mirziyoyev Meets UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres
Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.uz) — Uzbekistan President Shavkat Mirziyoyev met with United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation summit in Bishkek, with the sides discussing further cooperation between Uzbekistan and the UN and its institutions, as well as current international and regional issues.
At the beginning of the meeting, Guterres congratulated Mirziyoyev and the people of Uzbekistan on the country’s 35th anniversary of independence, wishing them peace, well-being and prosperity.
Mirziyoyev praised the UN secretary-general’s personal contribution to developing multifaceted cooperation between Uzbekistan and the organisation. He also expressed support for Guterres’ initiatives aimed at reforming the UN system.
The meeting highlighted an intensification of dialogue between Uzbekistan and the United Nations, as well as an expansion of exchanges of visits. Particular attention was paid to Uzbekistan’s participation in the work of the UN’s elected bodies.
Over the past several years, the UN General Assembly has adopted 15 resolutions initiated by Uzbekistan.
Guterres welcomed Uzbekistan’s progress in implementing the Sustainable Development Goals. The two sides confirmed their readiness to continue active cooperation in this area.
Mirziyoyev and Guterres also exchanged views on current international and regional issues. The meeting included a review of the schedule of upcoming joint events.
