Migration Agency Staff Suspected of Embezzling Budget Funds

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.uz) — Officials of Uzbekistan's Migration Agency under the Cabinet of Ministers are suspected of embezzling nearly 1 billion soums in budget funds, the Department for Combating Economic Crimes under the Prosecutor General's Office said.

According to the department, two employees in Tashkent were paid a total of 931.6 million soums in salaries during a period when they were not performing their job duties.

The department also said that another 88.5 million soums was paid to eight employees who had previously been subject to disciplinary sanctions.

A criminal case has been opened under Article 167 of Uzbekistan's Criminal Code, which covers embezzlement through misappropriation or misapplication of entrusted property. The investigation is ongoing.
