Lang Lang Performs at Registan Square in Samarkand for First Time

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.uz) — Renowned pianist Lang Lang performed for the first time at Registan Square in Samarkand on 6 September, appearing with the National Symphony Orchestra of Uzbekistan conducted by Alibek Kabdurakhmanov. The concert was organized by the Uzbekistan Art and Culture Development Foundation.

The performance continued the foundation’s international cultural initiatives aimed at promoting cultural exchange and strengthening humanitarian ties through the arts. Following a concert at the foot of the Great Wall of China in Beijing, the musicians presented a new program at Registan Square, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the main symbols of Uzbekistan’s historical and cultural heritage.

Lang Lang is one of the most influential musicians of the 21st century, with a career spanning leading concert venues around the world, including Carnegie Hall, the Royal Albert Hall, the Berlin Philharmonie and the Musikverein in Vienna. The pianist performed at the opening ceremony of the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games and took part in the opening ceremony of the 2018 Winter Olympic Games in PyeongChang. He has also repeatedly represented classical music at major international cultural and state events.

Through his performances and educational initiatives, Lang Lang has become one of the world’s leading ambassadors for classical music.

In Samarkand, Lang Lang and the National Symphony Orchestra of Uzbekistan, conducted by Alibek Kabdurakhmanov, presented a program featuring masterpieces of classical music.

The centerpiece of the evening was Sergei Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto No. 2, one of the best-known works in the global piano repertoire. The program also included works by Uzbek composers, highlighting the richness and distinctiveness of the country’s musical tradition.

The concert at Registan Square continued a series of large-scale international music projects organized by the Uzbekistan Art and Culture Development Foundation.

In recent years, the country’s historic sites have served as venues for performances by leading international artists, contributing to cultural dialogue and strengthening Uzbekistan’s position as a prominent center of international cultural life.
