IAEA Pledges Support for Uzbekistan Integrated Nuclear Plant
Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) — The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) will actively support the implementation of Uzbekistan's integrated nuclear power plant project at every stage, IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi said.
"We will contribute to the implementation of this project at all stages. You can be confident of that," Grossi said during a ceremony marking the start of construction work on the facility in Tashkent.
The integrated nuclear power plant project combines a large-scale nuclear power station and a small modular nuclear power plant at a single site. In September 2025, Uzbekistan's nuclear energy agency Uzatom and Russia's Rosatom agreed on an updated configuration for the project.
Under the supplementary agreement, the facility will comprise two large-capacity power units based on Generation III+ VVER-1000 reactors and two small-capacity units equipped with 55-megawatt RITM-200N reactors.
The total generating capacity of the project will exceed 2.1 gigawatts, including about 2 gigawatts from the large-scale plant and 110 megawatts from the small modular units.
Construction work on the project is already underway.
Preparations for the foundation pit of a RITM-200N reactor unit began in Uzbekistan's Jizzakh region in October 2025. In March 2026, the first concrete works started for the reactor building foundation, including the installation of waterproofing and grounding systems.
