Green Wave Traffic Light System Launched on Tashkent Street

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.uz) — The first section of a synchronized "green wave" traffic light control system has been put into operation in Tashkent. The new system began operating on Buyuk Ipak Yuli Street in the Mirzo-Ulugbek district, according to the Traffic Management Center.

Center specialists synchronized traffic lights across 13 intersections along the stretch from the Tura Buva Mosque to Salom Street. During morning hours, the system prioritizes traffic moving toward the city center, while in the evening, priority shifts to the opposite direction.

According to the Traffic Management Center, adjusting the traffic lights reduced average travel time from the Tura Buva Mosque to Salom Street from 8.5 to 6 minutes, a decrease of 29 percent. In the opposite direction—from Salom Street to the Tura Buva Mosque—travel time decreased from 10 to 8 minutes, or 20 percent.

The center noted that for the system to function effectively, drivers must obey traffic rules and speed limits. When traveling at speeds between 40 and 60 kilometers per hour along this section, drivers can pass through most intersections almost without stopping at red lights.

Specialists are currently conducting calculations and developing plans to implement the green wave system on other streets in Tashkent equipped with smart traffic lights.
