Ex-Police Officer Jailed Over Fatal Road Accident in Uzbekistan

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) — The Bekabad District Court for Criminal Cases has sentenced a former law enforcement officer to seven years in prison for a fatal hit-and-run and subsequent concealment of the crime.

Following the accident, he attempted to hide the evidence by disposing of the victim’s body in a canal, where it was discovered 80 days later.

The court found the defendant guilty under Part 2 of Article 266 of the Criminal Code of the Republic of Uzbekistan, which covers violations of traffic safety rules or vehicle operation resulting in the death of a person, and Article 134, which concerns desecration of a corpse. In addition to imprisonment, he was also banned from driving vehicles for three years.

According to case materials, the incident occurred on the night of 11 December 2025 on the Karasu–Buka–Bekabad road in Bekabad district of Tashkent region. The officer, then working in the Bekabad city Criminal Investigation Department, was driving a Nexia-3 vehicle while under the influence of alcohol when he hit a 43-year-old pedestrian walking along the roadside.

After the collision, he placed the injured man in his vehicle and initially intended to take him to a medical facility. However, he later decided to conceal the incident. He stated that after realizing the man showed no signs of life, he and his wife transported the body to the Dustlik canal and disposed of it in the water.

The body was found 80 days later. Investigators established the suspect’s involvement based on collected evidence, DNA test results, and other materials in the criminal case.

During the trial, the defendant fully admitted guilt and requested leniency.

The victim’s widow, however, demanded a severe sentence and compensation for material and moral damages suffered by the family.

The court imposed six years in prison under the article related to traffic violations causing death and four years under the article on desecration of a corpse. The final sentence, determined through partial aggregation, was seven years in prison in a penal colony.

The verdict may be appealed in accordance with the law.
