Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.uz) — The England national football team advanced to the quarter-finals of the World Cup after defeating Mexico 3-2 in a round of 16 match. The match took place in Mexico City, with the kick-off delayed by one hour due to adverse weather conditions.
Two goals from Jude Bellingham in the 36th and 38th minutes, along with a Harry Kane penalty in the 60th minute, secured the victory for England. Julian Quinones scored for Mexico in the 42nd minute, and Raul Jimenez converted a penalty in the 69th minute.
England defender Jarell Quansah was sent off in the 54th minute for a serious foul, but the team managed to hold onto their lead while playing at a numerical disadvantage.
In the quarter-finals, England will face Norway, who previously caused a sensation by defeating Brazil 2-1. The match is scheduled to take place during the night of 12 July 2026 Moscow time.
Cesar Montes, a defender for Moscow's Lokomotiv and the Mexican national team, started the match but was substituted after the first half.
This marks England's third consecutive appearance in the World Cup quarter-finals. The team finished fourth in 2018 and was eliminated in the quarter-finals in 2022.
Mexico became the second host nation of the 2026 World Cup to be eliminated from the tournament. Earlier in the round of 16, Canada lost 3-0 to Morocco. The United States team is still scheduled to play its match at this stage against Belgium.
