CCA Tashkent to Open in Historic Building on 6 September

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.uz) — The CCA Tashkent Center for Contemporary Art will open in Tashkent on 6 September, bringing together contemporary art, education, research and public initiatives in a historic building more than a century old.

The building was constructed in 1912 based on a design by architect Wilhelm Heinzelmann. It was initially used as a tram depot and later converted into a diesel power station.

As part of the project, the building’s historic appearance and industrial character have been preserved, while the space has been given a new functional purpose.

The project is being implemented at the initiative of the head of state and is aimed at preserving historical heritage while creating modern cultural infrastructure.

The architectural concept was developed by French firm Studio KO. It combines the building’s historic architecture with contemporary spaces for art, education and public activities.

The center will include exhibition halls, educational and public spaces, a library and research facilities.

In addition to contemporary art exhibitions, the venue will host lectures, film screenings, discussions, research projects, concerts and performances.

The project’s creators see CCA Tashkent not only as an exhibition venue but also as a space for cultural dialogue and interaction.

The historic building, once associated with energy production, is now set to become a platform for new creative ideas and cultural initiatives.

The Center for Contemporary Art is expected to become one of Tashkent’s new cultural destinations and contribute to the development of contemporary art and cultural and educational projects in Central Asia.
