Carlsen and Sindarov to Face Off Twice in GCL

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.uz) — World number one Magnus Carlsen and Uzbek grandmaster Javokhir Sindarov will face each other at least twice in the Tech Mahindra Global Chess League in Bengaluru, India, where six franchises are competing from 5 September to 13 September 2026.

Carlsen will play on the icon board for defending champions Alpine PBL Pipers, while Sindarov will occupy the same position for Fyers American Gambits. The players will meet twice during the preliminary double round-robin stage, playing one game with the white pieces and one with the black. Should both teams advance to the semifinals, third-place match, or final, Carlsen and Sindarov could face each other up to two additional times.

This season, the Global Chess League returns to India following its 2024 edition in London, with Bengaluru serving as the host city. The tournament concludes two days before the start of the Chess Olympiad in Samarkand, which will feature 400 teams.

Alongside Carlsen and Sindarov, the first boards for the remaining four franchises feature Alireza Firouzja for Triveni Continental Kings, Ian Nepomniachtchi for Ganges Grandmasters, former world champion Viswanathan Anand for PBG Alaskan Knights, and Maxime Vachier-Lagrave for CheQ Mumba Masters. Other notable men's division competitors include 15-year-old Turkish player Yagiz Kaan Erdogmus, while the women's division is led by Candidates runner-up Bibisara Assaubayeva.

Matches feature a time control of 20 minutes for the entire game with a two-second increment per move starting from move 41. Carlsen and Sindarov have previously met multiple times, primarily in Freestyle Chess, where the starting positions of non-pawn pieces are randomized. The upcoming matches will carry direct team implications, with individual results affecting their respective franchises' standings. Modeled after cricket's Indian Premier League, the Global Chess League aims to combine leading male, female, and youth players to expand international viewership. Organizers are also testing new technical solutions in Bengaluru, including predictive probability applications for match outcomes.

Separately, the European Senior Team Championship for 50+ and 65+ categories concluded on Friday in Hersonissos, Crete. The English men's 50+ team—comprising Grandmasters Stuart Conquest, Danny Gormally, Mark Hebden, and John Emms, alongside International Master Graeme Buckley—won the title with 17 out of 18 match points. Italy finished second with 16 points, while the Netherlands took third with 13 points, and England's second team placed fifth with 11 points. The English women's 50+ team, consisting of International Master Susan Lalic, Woman Grandmaster Sheila Jackson, FIDE Masters Petra Fink-Nunn and Helen Frostick, and Irina Troshina, automatically secured first place as the sole entry in their category.
