British Council Marks 30 Years of Work in Uzbekistan

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) — The British Council is marking 30 years of activity in Uzbekistan, reviewing its work in education, culture and the development of international cooperation between Uzbekistan and the United Kingdom.

The organisation began operating in the country in 1996 and, over the past three decades, has contributed to strengthening institutional ties between the two states, as well as developing partnerships in education and culture.

A statement from the organisation said its mission remains focused on building mutual understanding and trust between the two countries.

Michael Holgate, Director of the British Council in Uzbekistan, noted the organisation's significant contribution to the development of educational initiatives and highlighted the country's dynamic development. He said continued cooperation is based on a shared belief in the transformative role of education and international ties.

The organisation announced plans to hold a series of events to mark the anniversary, including new scholarship programmes, cultural initiatives and the publication of stories from people who took part in British Council projects.

According to the organisation, more than 1.7 million people have directly benefited from its programmes over the past 30 years, while the reach of its initiatives has exceeded 42 million people in Uzbekistan and the United Kingdom.

The British Council's current work in Uzbekistan focuses on three areas: developing educational cooperation and international university partnerships, supporting reforms in English language teaching, and developing the cultural and creative industries while strengthening ties between the creative communities of the two countries.

The British Council is the United Kingdom's international organisation for cultural relations and educational opportunities, operating in more than 100 countries worldwide to promote international cooperation in education, the arts and the English language.
