Uzhydromet Predicts Hot and Dry August for Uzbekistan

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.uz) — August 2026 in Uzbekistan will begin with dry and hot weather before temperatures gradually decrease, according to weather service Uzhydromet.

The average monthly temperature is expected to be close to long-term averages, while precipitation levels will be near or above normal.

On 1–2 August 2026, air temperatures across the country will reach 38–41 degrees Celsius, rising to 42–43 degrees in southern regions and desert zones.

Temperatures will then drop by 3–5 degrees, remaining between 33 and 38 degrees in most regions and reaching 40 degrees in places.

Toward the end of August, an influx of cooler air is possible, which could gradually push temperatures down to 25–30 degrees. Nighttime temperatures are expected to range mostly between 24 and 27 degrees in the first half of the month and 17–22 degrees in the second half. By late August, overnight lows may drop to 12–15 degrees in some areas.

According to Uzhydromet, August is typically the driest month of the year in Uzbekistan. Across most of the plains, light rain falls on average on one to three days, with monthly precipitation not exceeding 1–2 mm. In the Ferghana Valley, precipitation reaches 3–5 mm. In southern regions and desert zones, rain does not fall every August.

Rainfall occurs more frequently in foothills and mountainous areas. Average monthly precipitation reaches 12–15 mm in some places, rising to 20–22 mm in the mountains of Ferghana Region and the high-altitude areas of Tashkent Region.

Short-lived, mostly light rains are possible on certain days during the second half of August. Uzhydromet notes that while predicted monthly precipitation may be near or above normal, the seasonal norm for August remains very low.

Overall, August in Uzbekistan is usually slightly cooler than July, with average monthly temperatures 1.5–2.5 degrees lower. Across most of the territory, average maximum temperatures range from 35 to 37 degrees, reaching 38–40 degrees in the south and desert areas.

Hot days with temperatures of 40 degrees or higher occur less frequently in August than in July. On average, most of the country experiences one to three such days, while the far south and desert zones record four to eight days. In Samarkand Region and the Ferghana Valley, such heat spells are significantly rarer, occurring roughly once every five to 10 years.

Influxes of cool air typically increase by late August. In certain years, this has driven daytime temperatures across the country down to 22–27 degrees.

Uzhydromet also noted the impact of global warming on August temperatures, with the average temperature rising by 1.2–1.5 degrees between the baseline periods of 1961–1990 and 1991–2020.

Despite August being the driest month of the year, heavy downpours have been recorded in Uzbekistan in certain years.

In late August 2020, central regions received 10–34 mm of rainfall in 24 hours. In Tashkent, 17 mm of rain fell on 26 August 2020 against a monthly norm of 2 mm, setting an all-time record for single-day precipitation in August.

In August 2023, following a prolonged dry and hot spell, rain fell across almost the entire country from 27 to 31 August 2023.

In some areas, rainfall significantly exceeded monthly norms within just a few hours.

Near the Sariosiyo weather station in the foothills of Surkhandarya Region, 35 mm of rain fell in three hours and 10 minutes against a monthly norm of 0.4 mm, while near the Kokand weather station in Ferghana Region, 35 mm fell in 20 minutes against a monthly norm of 5 mm.
