Uzbekistan's Senate Removes Supreme Court Chairman

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) — A meeting of the Council of the Senate of the Oliy Majlis was held in Tashkent on 18 June, chaired by Tanzila Narbaeva, Chairwoman of the upper house of parliament, at which a proposal to change the composition of the Supreme Court of the Republic of Uzbekistan was considered.

Following the meeting, the Senate adopted a resolution removing Bakhtiyor Jahongirovich Islamov from the post of Chairman of the Supreme Court of the Republic of Uzbekistan.

The proposal for his removal had earlier been submitted to the Senate of the Oliy Majlis by President Shavkat Mirziyoyev. Under current procedure, the Chairman of the Supreme Court is appointed by the Senate on the recommendation of the head of state for a term of five years.

Islamov had held the post of Chairman of the Supreme Court since August 2022. His term was due to expire in 2027, but the law allows for early termination of office by decision of the Senate on the recommendation of the President.
