Uzbekistan Participates in Mercosur Leaders' Summit
Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.uz) — A delegation from Uzbekistan, led by the First Deputy Chairman of the Senate of the Oliy Majlis, Sodiq Safoev, participated in the summit of Mercosur leaders and partner states held in the Paraguayan capital of Asuncion. The Dunyo news agency reported the development, citing the press service of the upper house of parliament.
During the summit, participants discussed the development of the services sector, the improvement of transport and logistics infrastructure, and trade diplomacy. They also focused on the role of Paraguay as an important transport, logistics, and trade hub connecting the South American economy with global markets.
Speaking at the plenary session dedicated to the 35th anniversary of the signing of the Treaty of Asuncion, Sodiq Safoev highlighted the results achieved by Uzbekistan in its process of accession to the World Trade Organization.
He also reaffirmed the country's interest in expanding cooperation with Mercosur states in the fields of trade and investment, agriculture, food security, green energy, transport and logistics, education, science, tourism, and cultural and humanitarian exchanges.
On the sidelines of the summit, the sides reviewed measures to increase bilateral trade volumes between Uzbekistan and Paraguay and expand market access. They discussed implementing joint projects in the agro-industrial, energy, mining, chemical, and textile industries, as well as establishing an intergovernmental commission and preparing an industrial cooperation program.
Mercosur, the Southern Common Market, was established in 1991 to form a common market, ensure the free movement of goods, services, and factors of production, and coordinate the trade and economic policies of its member states.
The bloc currently comprises Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay, Uruguay, and Bolivia. According to the source, the combined population of these countries is approximately 300 million people, with a total gross domestic product of nearly US$3 trillion.
