Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.uz) — Uzbekistan ranked 19th in an international assessment of electric vehicle development compiled by consulting company Kept.

Compared with the previous study in 2024, the country dropped five places despite expanding production of electric and hybrid vehicles.

The 2026 ranking covered 30 countries. Experts assessed the size of the electric vehicle fleet, the availability of charging infrastructure, government support measures and other indicators. The study was based on data as of July 2026.

According to Kept, between 50,000 and 100,000 electric vehicles are in operation in Uzbekistan. By this measure, the country is in the same group as Russia and Malaysia. Kazakhstan’s electric vehicle fleet is estimated at 30,000–50,000 units.

Insufficient charging infrastructure remains one of the main constraints on the development of Uzbekistan’s electric vehicle market. The country received two out of a possible 20 points for this indicator. Kazakhstan received no points.

At the same time, Uzbekistan retains a leading position in Central Asia in the production of electric and hybrid vehicles. According to the study, projects by Chinese companies BYD and Leapmotor envisage a combined production capacity of up to 70,000 vehicles per year.

BYD also plans to increase its production capacity in Uzbekistan to 200,000 vehicles annually by 2030.

Among the factors holding back the industry, Kept experts identified the absence of domestic battery production, the underdeveloped manufacturing of electric public transport and the limited range of government incentives for the market.

China topped the ranking with 78 points. South Korea placed second with 69 points, followed by Germany with 67. The top five also included India (66 points) and the United States (65 points).

Kazakhstan ranked 18th with 40 points, one place ahead of Uzbekistan.

It was previously reported that Uzbekistan accounted for almost half of electric vehicle sales in the Eurasian region in 2025, making it the region’s largest electric vehicle market.
