Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.uz) — Uzbekistan is considering introducing a health technology assessment (HTA) system to improve decision-making in healthcare and ensure more efficient use of available resources.
The initiative was discussed during a meeting between Abdulla Azizov, Director of the Agency for the Development of the Medical and Pharmaceutical Industry, and Gavin Surgi, a specialist in the implementation and development of HTA systems.
The discussions focused on the organizational framework for a potential national HTA system, options for its phased introduction and international experience in the field.
Particular attention was given to assessing the clinical effectiveness and economic viability of medicines.
The participants also examined approaches to allocating healthcare resources more efficiently and applying transparent, evidence-based criteria when making decisions on reimbursement for pharmaceutical products.
Another area of discussion was the training of qualified specialists capable of supporting the development and operation of a health technology assessment system.
The meeting also addressed the need to strengthen coordination between relevant government agencies and establish effective mechanisms for evaluating medical technologies.
The proposed approach would draw on international practices while taking into account the specific characteristics and requirements of Uzbekistan's healthcare system.
The discussions form part of Uzbekistan's consideration of how health technology assessment could support decisions on the use of medicines, healthcare financing and resource allocation.
