Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan Discuss Transboundary Groundwater Protection

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.uz) — The first meeting of experts from Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan dedicated to the protection and sustainable use of the Tashkent transboundary aquifer took place in Tashkent on 1 July 2026.

The event was supported by the Water Convention of the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE).

The meeting was attended by representatives of relevant ministries and departments of both countries, international organizations, and specialists in the field of hydrogeology.

Participants discussed the implementation progress of a joint project aimed at the protection and rational use of transboundary groundwater, as well as prospects for future cooperation.

Following the discussion, the parties reviewed the preparation of a memorandum of understanding and the application of assessment indicators for transboundary water cooperation to achieve the UN Sustainable Development Goals.
