Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.uz) — The UN Security Council has unanimously adopted a resolution calling for an end to the recruitment and use of children in armed conflicts, including through digital technologies and social media. The resolution was drafted and presented by Greece.

The resolution strongly condemns violations of applicable international law involving the recruitment and use of children by parties to armed conflicts. It calls on all relevant parties to immediately end these practices and take specific measures to protect minors.

The document specifically addresses the use of digital platforms to recruit children into conflicts. The Security Council urged parties recruiting minors in violation of their international obligations to immediately cease such activities, including through social media.

The resolution states that measures taken in the digital environment must take children's best interests into account and ensure appropriate protection. At the same time, it recognises the positive role digital technologies can play in promoting digital literacy and enabling children to continue their education during conflicts, including through remote learning.

The Security Council called on states and UN entities to expand children's access to digital infrastructure and educational opportunities while reducing the digital divide.

The resolution also stresses that digital solutions should complement, rather than replace, direct child protection measures and in-person education in areas affected by armed conflict.

Teachers and other education professionals are encouraged to develop their skills in using new technologies and help children recognise online threats.

The document further calls on states to prevent the online recruitment of minors and stop their involvement in malicious digital activities.
