UN Rights Chief Warns of AI Risks

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.uz) — United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk has warned that advanced artificial intelligence systems could pose an existential threat to humanity and called on the international community to urgently strengthen AI regulation and safety measures.

Speaking at the 63rd session of the Human Rights Council, Türk said he shared concerns expressed by industry experts about the potential risks associated with the development of advanced artificial intelligence systems.

“I share the concerns of industry experts that advanced artificial intelligence systems may pose an existential threat to humanity. I urge every possible effort to ensure robust, unbreakable safeguards for artificial intelligence before it is too late,” he said.

According to Türk, he intends to send a letter in the coming days to all leading companies involved in the development of artificial intelligence systems.

The High Commissioner also drew attention to the concentration of influence within the AI sector. In his view, only a small group of people possesses “virtually unlimited power over AI.”

Türk said international agreements are needed to establish clear limits on the development and use of artificial intelligence.

“At a minimum, we need countries where AI systems are based, along with participants in their supply chains, to agree on observing certain ‘red lines’,” he said.

According to the High Commissioner, such measures are necessary to create reliable safety guarantees amid the rapid development of artificial intelligence technologies.
