Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.uz) — Uzbekistan’s First Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Higher Education and Science Erkinjon Turdimov has urged parents to take a more active role in their children’s education rather than limiting themselves to criticising schools and teachers.

He said the state had already created the necessary conditions for education, while further progress depended in part on compliance with established requirements and families’ involvement in the learning process.

“Everything has been provided by the state today. What is missing for your education and for your children?” Turdimov said.

According to the minister, parents should work with their children every day and monitor their academic progress. He questioned whether most adults devoted even an hour a day to additional study with their children.

“We must work with children, hold them accountable and teach them. If we do not work with children and continue to scold teachers, when will their status improve?” Turdimov said.

He linked raising the public standing of teachers to changes in how parents view schools, stressing that education is a shared responsibility across society. Everyone involved in the education system, he said, must fulfil their duties.

Turdimov also opposed adopting new laws to address problems in education. He argued that the necessary legal framework was already in place and that the main priority should be ensuring compliance with existing requirements.

“There is no need to reinvent the wheel. I simply want to establish order and clear requirements to achieve effective results. We will not adopt new laws — everything is already in place,” the minister said.

His remarks did not address teachers’ salaries or working conditions.
