Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.uz) — A proposal has been submitted to set the drinking water tariff for consumers in Tashkent at 3,100 soums per cubic metre. The initiative has been referred to the Tashkent City Council of People’s Deputies for consideration, representatives of Uzsuvtaminot JSC said at a press conference on 30 October.

The representatives did not specify the reasons for the proposed revision of the current rates.

The previous adjustment to water tariffs in Tashkent was made in 2023. At the time, Tashkent City Water Supply JSC proposed raising the price of drinking water for households from 400 to 1,400 soums per cubic metre.

The need for the increase was attributed to rising operating costs.

On 24 November 2023, the city council approved the new tariffs, which took effect on 9 December that year. Later, from 1 April 2024, the price per cubic metre, including VAT, was set at 1,568 soums for certain consumer categories.

The rate applies, in particular, to residents of private houses and newly built residential developments that are not connected to the centralised hot water supply system.

For comparison, the household water tariff in Tashkent Region is already 3,100 soums per cubic metre. Local authorities previously attributed the increase there to higher electricity costs, taxes, servicing foreign loans, wages, and expenses related to the repair and modernisation of water supply infrastructure.

The procedure for revising tariffs is предусмотрена by the Law on Drinking Water Supply and Wastewater Disposal.

Under the current procedure, proposals from water supply companies are reviewed by the authorised bodies, after which local councils of people's deputies make the final decision.

However, from 1 January 2027, approval of drinking water and sewerage tariffs is planned to be transferred to the Interdepartmental Tariff Commission under the Cabinet of Ministers.
